Dr. Gilles Guiheux is going to present a seminar on “A Sociology of Chinese Markets. The Case of YiWu (Zhejiang): From Peddling to International Trade ".

About the seminar:

The presentation will address the transformation of Yiwu from a market for rural peddlers to a wholesale market for international buyers. It will try to assess the part played by indigenous social dynamics as well as the role of the local State. Yiwu will be looked at as an example of how Chinese cities adapt to globalization.

About the speakers:

Dr. Gilles Guiheux is Senior Lecturer at the University of Artois (Arras, France) and, since September 2003, Director of the French Centre for Research on Contemporary China (Centre d'etudes francais sur la Chine contemporaine, CEFC) in Hong Kong and chief editor of Perspectives chinoises and China Perspectives. From 2001 to 2003, he was researcher at the CEFC. He specializes in business history and economic sociology of contemporary China. His most recent publications include Les grands entrepreneurs prives a Taiwan, la main visible de la prosperite (Paris, Cnrs, 2002). He has also published numerous articles and contributions in French and English on China and Taiwan enterprises and entrepreneurs. He received his Ph.D. from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris).
